But now they face the most serious threat to their traditions: globalization. Until 25 years ago, the Kirghiz tribe lived a quasi-Iron Age existence in one of the remotest places on earth. In 1981, Rachel Gerlik, a 42 year-old widow with two teenage girls, wants to join the founding group of a new religious settlement in the West Bank. The problem is that the settlement’s acceptance committee won’t approve her unless she remarries and demonstrates that she and her daughters can meet the group’s religious and ideological standards. When her youngest daughter is accused of seducing some boys from her youth movement, Rachel is forced to weigh her allegiances. Only the bachelor Yossi, the new man in her life, can show Rachel that living as an outcast is not as bad as it seems.

Chances of the World Changing
USA, 2005, 99 mins,
Eric Daniel Metzgar, director

What began as a desire to help save endangered turtles becomes an all-consuming passion for New York artist Richard Ogust who eventually shares his apartment with 1200 rare specimens of tortoises from around the globe. Brought to a personal and financial breaking point, Ogust must try to find a way to rebuild his life and ensure the survival of his precious charges. These are two ventures, Ogust muses, whose odds of success are as unlikely as those of the film’s title. This beautifully shot film tells the story of a man whose devotion to nature has literally taken him out of the world.
